Tonle Sap Lake

Tonle Sap Lake – Cambodia’s Living Wonder

Tonle Sap Lake is the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia and one of Cambodia’s most extraordinary natural treasures. Its size changes dramatically with the seasons—from roughly 2,700 km² during the dry season to up to 16,000 km² in the rainy season—making it a living, breathing ecosystem.

The lake is connected to the Mekong River by the Tonle Sap River, which uniquely reverses its flow twice a year. In the rainy season, water from the Mekong flows into the lake, causing it to expand and flood nearby forests and farmlands. During the dry season, the water flows back to the Mekong, leaving behind fertile plains that support both agriculture and fishing communities.

Tonle Sap is more than just a lake—it is a lifeline for millions of Cambodians. Its waters provide abundant fish, sustain floating and riverside villages, and support a diverse range of wildlife, including rare birds and aquatic species. Recognized as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, it reflects the delicate balance between humans and nature.

Visitors to Tonle Sap can experience breathtaking sunsets, vibrant fishing villages, and peaceful wetlands, offering a unique glimpse into Cambodia’s culture and traditional way of life. It’s a place where nature, community, and history flow together, creating an unforgettable experience for every traveler.

1. Mechrey Floating Village:
Mechrey Floating Village is one of the smallest and most authentic villages on Tonle Sap Lake, located about 25 km southeast of Siem Reap. Home to around 100 families, it is also where our Unique Kayaking Cambodia station is based. Visitors can enjoy kayaking through the floating village, exploring the nearby mangrove forest, and paddling out to the open water, all while observing locals fishing, cooking, and living in harmony with the lake. Mechrey is perfect for those seeking an authentic and peaceful Cambodian village experience.

2. Prek Toal Floating Village
Prek Toal Floating Village, situated in Battambang Province, is accessible from Siem Reap and offers an exceptional experience for bird enthusiasts. This village is renowned for its proximity to the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary, Southeast Asia’s largest waterbird colony, home to species like the Greater Adjutant, Milky Stork, and Spot-billed Pelican. Our kayaking tours provide a unique opportunity to explore this vibrant ecosystem, paddling through the floating village and into the expansive flooded forests. For those seeking an immersive experience, we also offer homestays in floating houses, allowing guests to live alongside local families and fully engage with the community’s daily life.

3. Chong Khneas Floating Village
Chong Kneas Floating Village is the closest floating village to Siem Reap, just 13 km from the city center, and is also the most famous on Tonle Sap Lake. Known for its bustling stilted houses, floating markets, and vibrant local life, it offers visitors an accessible glimpse into lake communities. While Unique Kayaking Cambodia does not normally operate kayaking tours here, guests can request a kayak experience if desired. Most of our visitors enjoy a luxury sunset boat ride, gliding through the village and surrounding waters while taking in the spectacular views and observing the daily life of local families.

4. Kampong Phluk Village
Kampong Phluk Village is located about 25 km east of Siem Reap, accessible via a well-paved road. This unique village sits partly on stilts and partly on floating platforms, adapting to the dramatic seasonal changes of Tonle Sap Lake. During the high-water season, the village is surrounded by flooded forests and mangroves, creating a serene and picturesque landscape. Visitors can explore the community’s daily life, including fishing, cooking, and local crafts, while experiencing a rowing boat ride with local residents through the mangroves. For added adventure, we also offer a cycling tour around the nearby countryside, giving guests a complete view of the area’s culture, nature, and traditional lifestyle. Kampong Phluk is perfect for travelers seeking authentic Cambodian village experiences combined with eco-friendly adventure.

5. Kampong Khleang Village
Kampong Khleang Village is one of the largest and most authentic floating villages on Tonle Sap Lake, located about 55 km northeast of Siem Reap. Unlike other more touristy villages, Kampong Khleang offers a genuine glimpse of daily life, with stilted houses rising high above the water to adapt to seasonal floods. Visitors can observe locals fishing, farming, and maintaining their homes, all in a serene and less crowded setting. Unique Kayaking Cambodia can arrange kayaking tours here upon request, but most guests enjoy the village through a vantage jeep ride, which provides panoramic views of the expansive lake, flooded forests, and stilted homes. Kampong Khleang is ideal for travelers seeking authentic experiences combined with unique sightseeing opportunities.
